John Willis is a Strategic Communications specialist in issue campaigns, advocacy communications, and public opinion research. Since he joined the firm in 1997, John has led projects for clients as diverse as UNICEF, the Communications, Energy & Paperworkers' Union (CEP), Amnesty International, Greenpeace International, and OXFAM. Recently, through is work with American and international organizations, he has been working to bring rigourous formal evaluation techniques to the highly dynamic world of advocacy campaigns.
John gained unique experience during
his 15-year career with Greenpeace, where he held
a variety of campaign positions in Canada, the
UK, Netherlands, and Japan from 1981 – 1996.
He was a Special Assistant to the Secretary-General
of the International Council for Local
Environment Initiatives during 1997.
As Chair of the Board of Greenpeace
USA (2000 – 2003), he spearheaded
the rebuilding of the organization after a lengthy
period of internal conflict and declining effectiveness.
He is currently a member of the Board
of the Consumers’ Association of Canada.
John is currently teaching at the
Ontario College of Art & Design, exposing
students to issues of equity and sustainability
as they impinge on architecture, industrial design,
and advertising. He has professional and voluntary
links with many of Canada’s most important
civil society organizations, and has published
articles on social and political affairs in NOW
Magazine, The Globe & Mail, Toronto Star,
Ottawa Citizen, and Progressive Policy Canada.
John is a Professional Member of the Marketing
Research & Intelligence Association.
John lives in downtown Toronto with
his partner, a developmental biologist, and their
two young children.
